This multimedia courseware (language learning program) is designed for secondary school students who are studying in Form 1 in Contemporary Literature course.

The syllabus consists of literary components such as poems, short stories and novels. However, I chose to focus on the GRAPHIC NOVEL; JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH.

I name my language learning program as Journey to Success.  Besides that, Journey to Success also covers all literary elements such as themes, moral values, setting and characterization. The study of the texts is meant to inculcate values and broaden learners’ perspective.

Below is a sample lesson plan for teachers’ reference:

Duration: 1 hour 20 minutes

Objectives:
• To understand description and dialogue
• To understand point of view
• To understand views of heroism

Materials:
• Journey To The Centre Of The Earth by Jules Verne.

Plan:

After students read the expedition of Axel and Otto Lidenbrock along with their loyal guide Hans Bjelke in their literature books, they are given a section from Verne’s book with the challenges that they face in their journey.

 

The students discuss the qualities of a hero that Verne identifies and compare them with their own concepts.

 
Students then work in groups to tell the expedition that the characters go through though their own point of view. They may use either prose of poetry.
Students share their stories with the class.

 
Either by teacher reading, student reading or handout, the class looks at Verne’s telling and discusses Verne’s use of description.
